Meteorological systems configured around the vessel and its research programme. Combine continuous surface observations, redundant instrumentation and upper-air soundings in a ship-based installation.
Custom solutions at sea
Start with the vessel.
Build around the observations.
Sensor selection, installation and data integration depend on the vessel, operating environment and scientific requirements. A custom system brings these elements together.
Define
Establish the required surface variables, upper-air observations and ship-system interfaces.
Install
Configure two surface meteorological systems and select suitable locations and connections aboard the vessel.
Compare
Cross-check observations from the two systems and investigate differences in the context of their installation and exposure.
Use
Bring measurements into logging, graphing, reporting and shipboard data distribution workflows.
Dual surface meteorological systems
Two observation sources.
Greater continuity.
Vessels typically use two surface met systems. Their observations can be compared as a consistency check, while the second system provides redundancy if one becomes unavailable.
Surface system 01
Shipboard observations
Measure the surface meteorological variables selected for the vessel’s operating and research requirements.
& redundancy
Surface system 02
A second observation source
Provide a comparison dataset and an alternative source of observations when the other system is unavailable.
Cross-comparison helps identify discrepancies; it does not replace sensor calibration. Interpretation should account for sensor exposure and differences between mounting locations.
Research vessel upper-air measurements
Extend the observations
above the sea surface.
For research vessels such as SA Agulhas II, the upper-air configuration can include a ruggedised iMet-3400 antenna/receiver with an iMet-54 radiosonde, complementing the vessel’s surface systems.

Shipboard receiving system
Ruggedised iMet-3400
Antenna / Receiver
Specify a ruggedised iMet-3400 configuration for shipboard reception of 403 MHz radiosonde telemetry. Mounting and integration are defined as part of the vessel installation.

Flight instrument
iMet-54
403 MHz Radiosonde
Collect temperature and humidity profiles, with multi-constellation GNSS for wind and altitude observations, during balloon-borne soundings from the research vessel.

Integrated vessel data
Make observations
available across the ship.
Ship-system integration
Bring meteorological measurements together with relevant vessel-system data through an installation configured for the ship.
Logging and reporting
Support timed standard messages, including IMMT and SHIP formats, alongside graphs, reports and data exports.
Onboard access
Distribute observations through a weather page server and configurable message interfaces, with user access controls.
Research continuity
Use activity logs and automatic backups alongside the dual surface systems to support continuity of data collection and review.
